Electric Cars Evolve Into Home Power Stations During Outages

Electric vehicle manufacturers are developing technology that allows the large batteries in electric cars to supply power to homes during electricity outages. Known as Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) or Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), these systems enable electricity to flow from the car's battery to household appliances or even parts of the home's electrical system, depending on the setup and vehicle model. While V2L allows direct connection of electrical devices to the car, V2H requires compatible home infrastructure and can power essential home systems such as lighting, refrigerators, and communication equipment for several hours.

This technology is not yet available in all electric vehicles and often requires specialized installation by certified professionals to ensure safety and compliance with electrical standards. The growing adoption of electric vehicles has prompted manufacturers to invest in these capabilities, envisioning cars as additional energy sources that can assist during emergencies and integrate with home energy management in the future.

In Israel, some electric car models support V2L for powering external devices, but full V2H integration for home electricity supply remains uncommon and requires further adaptation of both vehicles and home electrical systems. As the technology advances and standards are established, it is expected to become more widespread, potentially allowing families to rely on their parked electric cars as backup power sources instead of traditional generators during outages.
