No Charges Expected Against Driver in Fatal Accident of Judge Beni Shagai

The prosecution is not expected to file charges against the driver involved in the early-year accident that killed Beni Shagai, president of the Beersheba District Court, News 13 reported on Sunday. Initially, the driver was expected to face charges of negligent homicide. Shagai, 54, died after being hit while riding his motorcycle on Highway 6 near Kiryat Gat. Police suspect a vehicle entering from a side road collided with him, causing severe injuries that led to his death shortly after.

Shagai's lawyer, Ilon Oron, described the incident as tragic, explaining that his client was forced off the road and was surprised by the vehicle that struck him from behind. The accident has drawn condolences from prominent figures including Justice Minister Yariv Levin, who praised Shagai as a brilliant legal mind and exceptional judge who earned wide public trust during his leadership of the Beersheba District Court. President Isaac Herzog also expressed deep sorrow, highlighting Shagai's integrity, professionalism, and dedication to justice and reconciliation.

The decision not to prosecute the driver concludes the legal inquiry into the accident. Shagai’s death is mourned as a significant loss to Israel’s judicial system and the legal community.
