Researcher Debunks Moss Navigation Myth, Urges Compass Use in Forests
Shahar Lotan, an economic and strategic researcher, intelligence officer reserve, and history and geography enthusiast, challenges a common survival myth in his latest blog. The widespread belief that moss always grows on the north side of trees or rocks, guiding lost hikers, is inaccurate and potentially misleading. This myth, often portrayed in survival shows, is based on the idea that moss prefers the cooler, damper northern side in the Northern Hemisphere due to less direct sunlight.
Lotan explains that moss is a primitive plant without true roots, absorbing moisture directly from the air, thriving in high humidity and low light conditions. In Israel, moss is less common than in Europe, and its growth patterns are influenced by many factors beyond cardinal directions, such as tree lean, shading from other objects, wind patterns, and animal activity. These variables cause moss to grow unevenly, sometimes on multiple sides, making it an unreliable navigation tool.
In dense forests or shaded valleys, microclimates further complicate moss growth patterns, rendering the north-side rule ineffective. Lotan notes that the human brain tends to find patterns even where none exist, which perpetuates this myth. Historically, ancient navigators relied on celestial cues like the North Star (Polaris) for nighttime orientation and shadows cast by sticks during the day, but these methods also have limitations in dense woods.
He advises hikers to appreciate moss for its ecological role rather than as a compass substitute and recommends using a real compass for reliable navigation in isolated natural settings. This clarification aims to prevent hikers from wandering in circles based on false assumptions about moss directionality.
