Democratic Party's Phone Bot Malfunctions, Sparking Nationwide Alarm Over Silent Calls

On Wednesday, thousands of Israeli citizens received unexpected silent phone calls from an unfamiliar number with a Tel Aviv area code (03). Recipients heard complete silence on the other end, with no recorded message or voice, causing widespread concern on social media and WhatsApp groups about potential phishing attempts, espionage, or cyberattacks by hostile actors.

Investigations revealed the cause was a technical malfunction in the Democratic Party's automated dialing bot, which began making numerous calls without playing the intended recorded message. This incident was confirmed by reports from Kan News on Thursday. Automated calling systems are commonly used by political parties and organizations to reach large audiences quickly and cost-effectively, but such technical glitches can leave recipients feeling uneasy and suspicious.

The Democratic Party clarified that the calls were meant to promote a rally scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m. in Rabin Square, led by party chairman retired General Yair Golan. The party emphasized its commitment to canceling controversial judicial overhaul laws and replacing the current government, which it described as corrupt and untrustworthy, with one based on truth and responsibility.

This event occurred shortly after the party held digital primaries earlier in the week, with over 112,000 members voting to determine the candidate list for the upcoming Knesset elections. Notable winners included Yair (Yaya) Pink in fifth place, Omri Ronen seventh, and Moshe Redman ninth. The party is projected by polls to increase its Knesset representation to between nine and eleven seats. Recently, the party also faced legal challenges regarding candidate disqualifications over alleged incitement to refuse military service and controversy over Channel 14’s exclusion from the primary results announcement event.
