Former IDF Intelligence Chief Expresses Deep Skepticism Over South Lebanon Security Pilot

The third day of the "Safe Zone" pilot in southern Lebanon has begun, involving the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the villages of Farran, Sarifa, and Zotar al-Arabiya, replaced by Lebanese Army troops tasked with keeping the area free of Hezbollah presence. Former IDF Intelligence Unit 8200 commander Brigadier General Hanan Gefen spoke to Channel 14 News about the pilot's prospects, highlighting both cautious optimism and significant concerns.

Gefen noted that Israel is not blindly trusting the Lebanese Army but relies heavily on American guarantees, with the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) committed to closely monitoring the pilot's progress. He praised the Lebanese soldiers' disciplined and visible presence, stating, "Right now it looks good."

However, Gefen expressed deep skepticism about the pilot's long-term success, particularly regarding the gradual return of villagers to their homes. He warned that Hezbollah militants could disguise themselves among the returning population, questioning whether the Lebanese Army, weakened over years, can effectively detect and prevent terrorist infiltration. He added that American and Israeli liaison officers are "worried," and the situation on the ground demands continued vigilance.

Recent incidents have underscored these challenges. The Lebanese Army reported hearing gunfire near their deployment in Zotar al-Arabiya, allegedly from Israeli forces, which could delay the pilot's implementation. Meanwhile, Lebanese engineering units have begun clearing explosives and booby traps from the streets to assert control. Gefen concluded that the Lebanese Army is eager to demonstrate its authority, but procedural and bureaucratic issues remain, including unclear criteria for defining a "clean" area free of Hezbollah.

The pilot's outcome remains uncertain as Israel, Lebanon, and the U.S. navigate this delicate security arrangement in a volatile region.
