Travel Insurance Prices Vary by 71% for Same Trip, Study Finds
As over 100,000 travelers are expected to pass through Ben Gurion Airport daily in August, a price comparison reveals significant disparities in travel insurance costs for trips to Europe. A recent survey compared basic travel insurance policies covering baggage for a trip from August 9 to 13. Direct Insurance offered the lowest price at $10.25, while PassportCard was the most expensive at $17.50, marking a 71% price difference for the identical coverage.
Other insurers' prices ranged from $11 at Menora, $12 at Clal and Migdal, $13 at Phoenix, to $15 at Harel. Although the price gap may seem small for an individual, it can add up to tens of dollars for couples or families, especially before factoring in optional coverage extensions like baggage, trip cancellation, mobile phone protection, or extreme sports.
Credit card companies often provide travel insurance benefits, sometimes covering several days at no extra cost and offering discounted or free coverage for children. Health funds also negotiate favorable insurance deals for their members. The key takeaway is that just as travelers compare flight and hotel prices, they should also compare travel insurance offers to save money, particularly for family vacations during the busy summer season at Ben Gurion Airport.
