Israeli Police Spokespersons Clash with Investigations Chief Over Access to Case Files

An internal dispute has erupted within the Israeli police between the spokesperson division and Boaz Balat, head of the Investigations and Intelligence Division. The conflict arose after police spokespersons were reportedly blocked from accessing investigation case files due to concerns over leaks. The spokesperson division sharply criticized Balat, accusing him of hypocrisy and blaming "the biggest leaker" for the restrictions.

The spokesperson unit argues that denying them access to case files hampers their ability to provide accurate and timely information to the media, which is a core part of their role. They sent a message to Balat demanding the restoration of their access, emphasizing that briefing journalists is their responsibility, not his.

Conversely, officials in the Investigations and Intelligence Division claim that the spokespersons have become a burden on investigators. Since the access was blocked, investigators have had to respond to numerous inquiries from spokespersons, complicating ongoing investigations.

Currently, negotiations are underway between the spokesperson division and the Investigations Division to find a compromise that would allow spokespersons to regain access to case files while protecting sensitive investigative information. A response from Boaz Balat is pending.
