HBO's New Harry Potter Series Faces Tough Filming Conditions Due to Child Actor Restrictions

Adriano Goldman, the chief cinematographer for HBO's upcoming Harry Potter series, revealed that filming conditions have been very challenging due to strict limitations on the working hours of the young actors. Goldman explained in an interview with director André Fili that the crew must film very quickly, often compromising on quality, because the child actors can only work for about an hour and a half at a time. During these short periods, the team aims to complete six setups before the actors must leave the set.

The main young cast includes Dominic McCluskey as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arbella Stanton as Hermione Granger. To accommodate their schooling alongside filming, Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden established a temporary school on site. The Three Rivers District Council approved the use of several mobile buildings as classrooms for up to ten years. This school typically serves around 150 students but can expand to 600 during large scenes involving many young extras.

The educational facility operates on weekdays from 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., allowing the actors to balance their studies with night shoots, pickups, and outdoor filming. Goldman noted that the filming schedule is non-linear and complex due to these constraints, requiring scenes to be shot out of order and often in advance while the children are in class.

The new Harry Potter series is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max Israel on December 26, 2026.
