Portugal Honors Israel for Protecting Jewish Communities and Heritage Worldwide
The B'nai B'rith Portugal organization and the International Observatory for Human Rights (OIDH) awarded an official recognition to the State of Israel for its role in safeguarding the Jewish people, culture, and communities globally. The ceremony took place in Porto, Portugal, where Israeli Ambassador Oren Rosenblat accepted the honor. In his speech, Rosenblat emphasized Israel's connection to the Jewish diaspora, stating, "Israel is the home of every Jew. We are one people." He added that protecting Jewish culture abroad and supporting Israel's sovereignty are intertwined, with Jewish security worldwide relying on Israel's strength and safety.
Dr. Luis Andrade, president of OIDH, highlighted that Israel's establishment fundamentally changed the Jewish people's status after two millennia of exile and persecution. He noted that without Israel, Jewish communities would lack security and the ability to promote their culture. Miriam Asor, representing the Jewish community in Lisbon, stressed that Jewish culture extends beyond religion and that protecting Jewish tradition, history, Israel, and human rights is integral to the community's identity and cohesion.
David Netaf, vice president of B'nai B'rith Portugal, remarked that Israel's commitment to the diaspora has been steadfast since 1948. Through government offices, security agencies, and national institutions, Israel continuously works to strengthen the resilience, security, and trust of Jewish communities worldwide, especially amid rising antisemitism. During the event, a letter from Gil Rodrigues Carvalho, a former senior Portuguese police official, praised Israel's dedication to protecting Jews beyond its borders, calling it impressive that a small Middle Eastern country manages multiple enemies while dedicating resources to safeguarding millions of Jews globally.
The recognition declaration underscored Israel's significance beyond its national borders, highlighting its central role in preserving Jewish heritage, defending Jewish human rights, and ensuring that Jews never again depend on others for their protection.
