New Mystery Novel by Late Israeli Author Edna Mazia Released Posthumously

A new thriller novel titled "The Observers" has been published posthumously, based on a manuscript left by the late Israeli playwright and author Edna Mazia, who passed away in 2023 at age 74. The book, released by Keter Publishing, was completed and edited by screenwriter and author Maayan Rogel, who worked closely with Mazia's family and friends to preserve the original voice and style.

"The Observers" centers on a retired grandmother, formerly head of a pathology institute, and her teenage granddaughter. The two use an old theater binocular to spy on their famous theater actor neighbors, only to witness something that entangles them in a murder investigation within Israel's cultural scene. The grandmother is portrayed as a cynical, misanthropic woman who prefers the company of the dead over the living, and the story explores her strained personal relationships.

Mazia had initially planned the story as a television series but later decided to make it a novel. After her death, Keter Publishing approached Rogel to finish the manuscript. Rogel described the process as meticulous, involving multiple drafts and consultations with Mazia's close friends and daughter. She recounted a symbolic moment when technical difficulties with the manuscript seemed to resolve after she spoke aloud to Mazia's spirit, promising to honor her work.

The novel maintains Mazia's characteristic sharp wit and dark humor, and Rogel emphasized her commitment to preserving the authentic tone and the central relationship between grandmother and granddaughter. The book offers a blend of suspense, cultural commentary, and personal drama, continuing Mazia's legacy in Israeli literature and theater.
