Hezbollah Warns Lebanese Army of Military Resistance to Disarmament Efforts Including in Beirut
A pilot agreement between Israel and Lebanon has commenced, with the Lebanese army deployed in areas previously held by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) along the Blue Line. The Lebanese forces are tasked with clearing these zones of Hezbollah weaponry as part of a phased security handover. However, a senior Israeli security official warned that Hezbollah is expected to militarily oppose any attempts by the Lebanese army to disarm it, including potential threats to seize government institutions in Beirut.
The arrangement, negotiated in Washington, involves Israel and Lebanon agreeing to a gradual process whereby the Lebanese army reclaims control over southern border areas, contingent on the disarmament of all non-state armed groups, explicitly targeting Hezbollah. The Lebanese army has already taken control of the first pilot area, consisting of two villages beyond the Blue Line, where it will begin removing Hezbollah's weapons.
Despite the pilot's launch, a major dispute remains between Israel and Lebanon. Israel insists that the Lebanese army dismantle terrorist infrastructure even on private properties, a demand the Lebanese military resists. This disagreement complicates the implementation of the agreement. Israeli officials remain concerned that Hezbollah will do everything possible to derail the deal, including direct military confrontation with the Lebanese army and threats against Lebanese state institutions.
The situation underscores the fragile balance in southern Lebanon, where Hezbollah's influence challenges state authority and complicates efforts to stabilize the border region. The coming months will test the Lebanese army's ability to enforce the agreement and Hezbollah's willingness to comply or resist.
