Knesset Approves First Reading for National Center Honoring Rabbi Nachman of Breslov
The Knesset plenary approved in a first reading the bill to establish a national center dedicated to commemorating Rabbi Nachman of Breslov. The bill, initiated by Likud MK Eliyahu Raviv and supported by MK Tzvi Sukkot, passed shortly before the Knesset's dissolution on Thursday night. It had previously cleared a preliminary reading and was prepared by the Education, Culture, and Sports Committee chaired by Sukkot.
According to the proposed legislation, a public corporation will be created to preserve, research, and make accessible Rabbi Nachman's legacy for future generations. The center will include a research institute, archive, and museum, focusing on collecting, documenting, preserving, and disseminating his writings, activities, and teachings through research, education, public outreach, and cultural activities.
MK Eliyahu Raviv, the bill's sponsor, emphasized the significance of Rabbi Nachman's phrase "There is no despair in the world," calling it a guiding principle throughout his current Knesset term. MK Tzvi Sukkot praised the advancement of the bill as a vital step to safeguard the heritage of one of the greatest spiritual leaders in Jewish history, whose influence spans diverse communities worldwide. He noted the phrase's resonance and its practical demonstration in recent times.
With the Knesset now dissolved, the legislative process will continue in the next Knesset session, requiring second and third readings before the bill becomes law.
