Diego Maradona's Former Aide Testifies on Forced Hospitalization Consideration Before Death
As Argentina advanced to the World Cup final, the trial concerning Diego Maradona's death continued with testimony from his former personal secretary, Maximiliano Pomargo. Pomargo stated that he managed all aspects of Maradona's affairs, from buying shoes to communicating with FIFA's president. He described Maradona's condition before his death as a "free fall," warning the doctor about Maradona's excessive alcohol consumption. Pomargo revealed that they even discussed the possibility of forced hospitalization that month, although Maradona resisted any such treatment and Pomargo himself would not have acted against his will.
Pomargo also reported to the medical staff that Maradona appeared swollen and deeply depressed, but the doctor attributed these symptoms to Maradona spending much time lying down. Additionally, Maradona's psychologist, Carlos Diaz, testified that his treatment proposals were rejected by the entourage. Diaz wanted to prescribe medication that could cause adverse reactions when combined with alcohol and advocated for complete abstinence from alcohol to prevent cardiac events, but he was unable to implement this approach.
According to the autopsy report, Maradona died in November 2021 from acute pulmonary edema and severe chronic heart failure. His death has left many unresolved questions. The ongoing trial is examining the circumstances and medical care leading up to the legendary footballer's passing.
