Jerusalem Mayor Cancels White Ridge Construction to Protect City Forests
Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Leon has officially announced the cancellation of the original construction plan in the White Ridge area to protect the open spaces and green urban landscape surrounding the local springs, which serve as a sea substitute for the city's residents. This controversial plan had faced years of legal battles and public protests. The mayor's declaration aims to preserve the city's vital green lung.
During the 54th Annual Science and Environment Conference in Jerusalem, Mayor Leon emphasized the importance of Jerusalem's forests, stating that he halted the original White Ridge plan after personally inspecting the area and noting its natural springs, wildlife, and approximately 11,500 trees. He affirmed that no trees would be cut down during his tenure.
In collaboration with the Jewish National Fund (Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael, KKL), the municipality is advancing a project to develop about 200 kilometers of walking and cycling trails connecting the Ramot neighborhood to Gilo. This initiative is already underway and aims to enhance the city's natural assets and recreational infrastructure.
