Jerusalem Mayor Moses Leon Vows Light Rail Will Operate Despite Extremist Disruptions
Jerusalem Mayor Moses Leon delivered a firm message at the Israel Hayom conference at the David Citadel Hotel, asserting that the Bar Ilan light rail line will commence operations regardless of protests or infrastructure damage. Addressing tensions surrounding the project, Leon emphasized that the police must act decisively to prevent further destruction caused by ultra-Orthodox demonstrators. "The police are responsible for handling this," he said, acknowledging the significant financial and scheduling setbacks caused by the disruptions.
Leon highlighted that the rail tracks are already laid out along Bar Ilan Street, with remaining work including electrical connections, and insisted that the project will move forward. On managing Jerusalem's delicate social fabric amid rising inter-community tensions, Leon stressed the importance of unity. He stated, "The secret to success is unity," clarifying that unity does not require full agreement but a shared commitment to work together for the city's benefit.
The mayor also discussed his inclusive approach to governance, noting substantial investments in East Jerusalem despite low electoral support from that area. He explained that as mayor of over one million residents, he is committed to ensuring all citizens receive fair municipal services. Leon’s remarks reflect his vision for a cohesive Jerusalem where diverse populations coexist and city projects proceed despite opposition.
