Women Report Menstrual Cycle Disruptions Amid Extreme Heatwaves in Israel and UK
In recent weeks, many women in Israel and the UK have reported unusual menstrual cycle disruptions, including early periods, delayed menstruation, or even experiencing two cycles within one month. These accounts have flooded social media, sparking widespread discussion. Israeli social media influencer Korin Gideon highlighted that numerous followers shared their experiences of irregular cycles, prompting questions about the cause.
The phenomenon coincides with recent extreme heatwaves affecting both regions. British media have also covered the issue, exploring whether the heatwaves could be linked to menstrual irregularities. Experts suggest that while high temperatures might not directly alter menstrual timing, indirect effects such as sleep disturbances, dehydration, physical stress, or heat-related illness could temporarily impact hormonal balance and ovulation, leading to cycle changes.
Dr. Moran Agassi Zeitler, a gynecology and obstetrics specialist and menopause consultant at Maccabi Healthcare Services, explained that no conclusive scientific evidence currently proves a direct causal relationship between environmental heatwaves and menstrual cycle shifts. Most studies have failed to show that short-term exposure to extreme temperatures significantly changes cycle timing. However, she noted that extreme heat could indirectly affect the cycle through physiological stressors.
For women experiencing persistent or recurrent irregularities, Dr. Agassi Zeitler advises seeking medical evaluation to rule out other causes rather than attributing changes solely to weather. She also emphasized that women undergoing menopause may be more sensitive to temperature changes, which can exacerbate hot flashes, sweating, and fatigue, especially during hot and humid conditions.
Despite the surge in anecdotal reports, experts caution that the current evidence does not confirm a widespread phenomenon directly caused by heatwaves. Temporary menstrual changes may occur during periods of intense heat combined with poor sleep and dehydration, but prolonged or severe irregularities warrant professional medical attention.
