Against the backdrop of tensions between Israel and Türkiye, U.S. President Donald Trump was asked whether he expects a military conflict between the two countries. Trump replied that he “very much likes” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and stressed: “I don’t think it will happen as long as I am president, because Erdogan respects me and I respect him.”
Against the backdrop of the growing tensions between Israel and Türkiye, U.S. President Donald Trump was asked whether he sees a possibility of a military conflict between the two countries. Trump said he “very much likes” President Erdogan of Türkiye, and assessed that such a scenario is not expected to happen during his term. “I don’t think it will happen as long as I am president, because Erdogan respects me and I respect him,” he said.

Trump’s remarks came after the widely publicized confrontation between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Turkish president. In a speech Erdogan delivered earlier today, Wednesday, to his Justice and Development Party (AKP) faction in Ankara, he said that Türkiye would respond “firmly and clearly” to any threat to its sovereignty and to the rights of Turkish Cypriots in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Erdogan later also referred to the situation in Syria and Lebanon, claiming that “the security of Damascus and Beirut is Türkiye’s security.” According to him, Ankara will not accept “facts on the ground” in the region and added that “we will never allow Israel to implement the ‘promised land’ plan.”

The president added: “Eighty-five years ago, silence and inaction in the face of Hitler led to the deaths of 80 million people around the world. All of humanity paid the price for the madness of a deranged tyrant.” According to him, “today, the same mistake is repeating itself. The genocide crimes of Netanyahu, the butcher from Gaza, and his government are being watched in the same silence and lack of response that once greeted Hitler.”

“No one should forget that when a fire grows, it does not only burn the area where it starts, its sparks spread around the world. Just as the whole world is paying the price today for the unresolved situation in the Strait of Hormuz, if Israel’s lawlessness does not come to an end, all of humanity, together with the region, will bear the consequences.”
Prime Minister Netanyahu did not remain silent, and not long afterward issued a statement to the press in response to Erdogan. “The antisemitic tyrant Erdogan, who is committing genocide against the Kurds, supports the Hamas terror organization, suppresses his own people and throws political opponents in prison, is the last person who can preach morality to the State of Israel.”

Netanyahu made clear that Erdogan’s threats do not shake Israel’s course even for a moment: “The state and the IDF, the most moral army in the world, will continue to act with strength against Iran and its proxies, which threaten the Middle East and the entire world.”
