Streaming company Deezer has launched a free online tool for identifying songs created with artificial intelligence. The tool scans playlists from 20 leading platforms and allows users to identify AI content. The move comes amid troubling data showing that 44% of the new music on the platform is created by AI, and 85% of those plays are fake.
As the use of artificial intelligence to create music continues to rise in streaming services, concerns are growing over the use of copyrighted material and fear of fraud in playback systems. While many streaming companies have yet to launch detection tools, Deezer decided to take matters into its own hands and today, Thursday, launched a new tool that scans playlists from various platforms and identifies tracks created using artificial intelligence. The move positions Deezer as one of the industry's strongest opponents of AI music, unlike competitors such as Apple Music and Spotify, which have opted for labeling only.
Deezer's free online tool supports 27 languages and allows users from 20 popular platforms to check whether their playlists include songs created by artificial intelligence. To use it, users need to access the dedicated website, choose the streaming service and allow Deezer access to the playlists. After import, the service scans the content, notifies users of its findings and offers an option to share the results. The tool is compatible with Spotify, Apple Music, SoundCloud and YouTube Music, among others.
The launch of the tool comes after Deezer revealed a troubling figure, 44% of all new music uploaded to the platform was created by artificial intelligence. The company is flooded with about 75,000 AI tracks every day, and more than two million a month in total. Despite the flood, the listening rate for AI music remains relatively low, accounting for only 1% to 3% of total plays. About 85% of those plays are flagged as fraudulent and are excluded from revenue by the platform.
Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier said the company is considering future steps, including updating supplier policies or removing content, similar to Bandcamp, which banned AI music earlier this year. According to him, Deezer is at the forefront of transparency in streaming and decided to allow anyone to check their playlists, regardless of the platform they use.
