Haredi Father Sentenced to Military Prison Sparks Family's Plea for Help
A 23-year-old Haredi father of three was arrested and sentenced to 20 days in military prison after attempting to regularize his status at the Israeli recruitment office last week. Following his detention, he was initially held in a detention wing and later transferred to Military Prison 10. His family alleges he was subjected to humiliating treatment during his arrest and detention, including being forced to stand for hours with a heavy backpack and receiving discriminatory remarks related to his religious appearance, such as his payot and kippah.
His mother-in-law described the emotional toll on the family, particularly highlighting a distressing phone call between the man and his three-year-old daughter, who repeatedly asked if he loved her, not understanding his sudden absence. She also recounted how his wife is struggling alone with their three young children, describing her as feeling like a widow and overwhelmed by the situation both emotionally and financially.
The family is seeking legal assistance and hopes for his early release. They claim the military judge told him during the trial, "May you have enough time to sit in prison. What do you want to do in the army?" The family suspects bias influenced by his Haredi identity. The Israeli military spokesperson was contacted for comment, with a response pending.
