OpenAI Prepares to Launch First Smart Speaker with Autonomous Movement and AI Assistant
OpenAI is developing its first hardware product, a portable smart speaker powered by the GPT-Live model, aiming for a 2027 release according to Bloomberg. Unlike typical smart speakers, this device will feature cameras, advanced sensors, and mechanical components enabling it to move autonomously around the home. The goal is to create a proactive AI assistant that can provide information, respond to messages, and control smart home devices through continuous, natural conversations.
The product is designed with input from Apple’s legendary designer Jony Ive and engineers formerly from Apple, promising a premium aesthetic. The speaker’s advanced sensors will allow it to better understand the user’s environment and context, surpassing current smart speaker capabilities. This launch is seen as a direct challenge to Google’s recently unveiled Google Home Speaker, which uses the Gemini AI model.
However, OpenAI faces legal challenges as Apple has filed a lawsuit accusing it of stealing trade secrets for hardware development. OpenAI denies these claims but acknowledges the dispute could delay the product’s launch. Alongside the speaker, OpenAI is also developing four other devices, including a wearable intended to eventually replace smartphones.
The competition in the smart home market is intensifying, with Google selling its smart speaker for $99 and emphasizing real-time error correction and short-term memory. OpenAI is betting on combining physical mobility and high-end design to differentiate its offering. A key question remains whether consumers will accept mobile cameras in their homes or prioritize privacy over advanced technology.
