OpenAI Unveils AI-Powered Mobile Smart Speaker as Its First Hardware Device
OpenAI is developing its first physical product, a mobile smart speaker without a screen, designed to serve as an AI companion rather than a traditional voice assistant. According to Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman, the device aims to redefine what a "computer" means in the AI era by proactively understanding and anticipating user needs. The speaker will integrate ChatGPT’s latest GPT-Live conversational capabilities, enabling natural, context-aware interactions and simultaneous listening and speaking.
The device will function as a home companion, capable of controlling smart home devices, accessing personal emails and information, playing media, responding to messages, and offering personalized assistance that improves over time. It will feature mechanical components allowing autonomous movement, giving it a distinct personality and presence within the home. Unlike typical smart speakers, it will include a rechargeable battery for portability across rooms.
OpenAI’s hardware division, bolstered by the 2025 acquisition of Johnny Ive’s design startup io Products for $6.5 billion, involves former Apple designers and engineers such as Tang Tan and Evans Hankey. The project is part of a broader hardware strategy, with around five products in development and plans to launch the speaker in 2027, though legal challenges from Apple could affect the timeline.
Apple recently sued OpenAI, accusing it of stealing trade secrets through former Apple employees now working at OpenAI, including Tan. OpenAI denies these allegations, stating its product is fundamentally different from Apple’s offerings and that it respects other companies’ trade secrets.
Looking ahead, OpenAI envisions more advanced AI hardware, including a mobile AI device potentially replacing smartphones, wearable AI products, and home robotics. Meanwhile, Apple is also advancing its AI smart home devices, developing a new control center with a 7-inch screen and robotic arm, alongside enhanced home security systems. The key question remains whether consumers will embrace AI devices that not only respond but also deeply understand and anticipate their needs.
