Israeli Law Named After Fallen Border Police Officer Barel Passes, Honored by His Mother
Nitza Shmueli, mother of the late Border Police officer Barel Hadaria Shmueli, met with Knesset member Amit Halevi following the approval of the "Barel Law." During their meeting at the Knesset, they discussed the significance of the law and the memory of Barel. Halevi described the law's approval as a "great privilege," emphasizing that it will save many lives by ending the previous negligence that allowed attackers to approach Israel's border, as happened in Barel's case.
Shmueli expressed her gratitude to Halevi, calling the law a meaningful form of commemoration that is "not taken for granted." She hopes the law will deter any terrorist considering entering Israeli territory to harm citizens, stating such individuals will face certain death. In an interview with Channel 7, Shmueli explained that she came to the Knesset to understand how much Barel's legacy remains alive, noting that while he is no longer physically present, the law bearing his name continues his memory.
Additionally, Shmueli shared that Barel is commemorated through various initiatives across Israel, including Torah scrolls, a basketball hall in Be'er Ya'akov, and a combat fitness program named after him.
