Hezbollah Opponents in Lebanon Welcome Deal With Israel as a Historic Opportunity
A political figure in the camp opposing Hezbollah in Lebanon described the agreement reached between Israel and Lebanon as "historic," Kan News reported this evening, Thursday.
According to the political figure opposed to Hezbollah, the agreement is significant because it explicitly addresses ending the hostility between Israel and Lebanon and states that Hezbollah is the problem. He added that Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem's rejection of the agreement gives Israel justification to continue the war, and that Hezbollah will bear sole responsibility for its consequences.
At the same time, a senior Israeli official told Kan News today that the agreement reached gave Lebanon an opportunity to dismantle Hezbollah. The official added that the United States understands the Israeli position and Israel's commitment to provide protection to residents if the agreement does not materialize.
The cabinet is meeting this evening to discuss the issue, amid opposition from a large number of ministers to the ceasefire principles. The ministers are expected to receive an update on the details themselves, some of which are not entirely clear, such as who will monitor the activity of the Lebanese army in those pilot areas and how, to ensure that there is truly no Hezbollah activity there.
