Six Italian Soldiers Rescue Driver from Car Plunging into Sea in Trieste Harbor
A routine visit to the central square in Trieste, Italy, turned into a dramatic rescue early this week when a car suddenly plunged off the harbor pier into the sea. Around 12:15 p.m., while tourists and locals were at Piazza Unità d'Italia, a private vehicle lost control and fell into the water. Fortunately, a group of six military personnel from the Modena Military Academy, visiting the city officially, witnessed the accident.
The group, consisting of four officers and two non-commissioned officers, immediately sprang into action without hesitation. They jumped into the cold water and swam toward the rapidly sinking car. Demonstrating decisive and professional conduct, they reached the vehicle, extracted the trapped driver from the cabin, and brought him safely to the surface. They then swam back to shore where emergency medical teams were waiting.
The driver received immediate medical attention from emergency services (118) upon reaching safety. The Italian military headquarters praised the soldiers' actions as a testament to their core values, readiness, and resourcefulness, highlighting their commitment to protecting human life even outside routine operations. The dramatic rescue footage was released by the Italian Ministry of Defense and garnered widespread attention.
