Multiple Explosions Hit Southern Iran Amid US-Iran Military Escalation in Strait of Hormuz
Several explosions were reported on Tuesday in southern Iran, specifically in the port cities of Bandar Abbas and Bushehr, following a night of intensified military exchanges between the United States and Iran. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced it had completed a five-hour wave of airstrikes targeting Iranian military sites across several locations, including Bushehr, Chabahar, Jask, Konarak, Abu Musa, and Bandar Abbas. These strikes aimed to degrade Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
US President Donald Trump stated that the attacks focused on Iran's offensive capabilities related to the Strait of Hormuz and emphasized the US interest in compensation for protecting Gulf states. Trump also mentioned the possibility of targeting Iran's underground nuclear site near Natanz, highlighting ongoing surveillance efforts.
In response, Iran's Revolutionary Guards claimed to have attacked American targets in the Gulf, including the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, striking fuel depots, radar systems, and control centers. Iran also reported strikes on US military facilities in Kuwait. Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates confirmed that two oil tankers were hit by Iranian cruise missiles south of the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in one Indian crew member's death and eight injuries, four of them serious.
Oman, located on the opposite side of the Strait, is actively seeking a long-term regional agreement to ensure freedom of navigation through this vital waterway. Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi accused Israel of being the primary threat to Gulf security, stating that the most serious threats come from outside the region, particularly from Tel Aviv. He also called for recalibrating relations with the US to reflect the new strategic realities revealed by the conflict, describing the war as a failure that achieved none of its objectives.
These developments underscore the Strait of Hormuz's renewed role as a flashpoint in US-Iran tensions, with Washington escalating strikes on Iranian military capabilities and Tehran continuing to threaten and reportedly attack US and allied targets in the Gulf. Oman’s diplomatic efforts aim to de-escalate the situation and preserve maritime security in one of the world's most critical shipping lanes.
