Ukraine Continues Strikes on Russian Oil Refineries Deep Inside Russia
Ukraine has intensified its campaign targeting Russian oil refineries, striking the refinery in Salavat, Bashkortostan, approximately 1,400 kilometers from Ukrainian-controlled territory. Recent footage shows thick black smoke rising from the refinery, located in a region dense with petrochemical plants integral to Russia's oil industry. Ukrainian forces have systematically attacked refineries across Russia in recent weeks, starting near Moscow, extending to northwestern areas like Saint Petersburg, and now reaching close to the Kazakhstan border.
Despite Russia being a major global oil producer, its ability to refine crude oil into usable fuels such as diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel is severely hampered by these attacks. This disruption has led to significant fuel shortages, with long queues reported at gas stations in remote regions like Siberia. In response, Russia has banned diesel exports and is seeking fuel imports from countries including China, India, and Iran. These refinery strikes risk driving up global fuel prices, even as crude oil prices remain relatively stable.
