Itamar Fleishman Urges IDF Chief to Choose Between Military Role and Political Activity

During a broadcast on Channel 14's program The Patriots, commentator Itamar Fleishman sharply criticized IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi, referring to him by his first name and accusing him of engaging in political discourse. Fleishman argued that Kochavi's public statements constitute a political move inappropriate for his military position, especially in light of lessons learned from the October 7 massacre and the ongoing Iron Swords war. He insisted that uniformed officers must refrain from political involvement to maintain the military's integrity.

Fleishman called on Kochavi to hold a press conference only if he intends to resign, drawing a parallel to former Chief of Staff Yigal Yadin's precedent. He stated, "The only legitimate press conference the Chief of Staff should hold is if he decides to say, 'This is the situation, I do not trust the government, and I resign.'" While acknowledging Kochavi's effective war management and giving him credit for military successes, Fleishman expressed discomfort with his conduct under pressure.

Highlighting a key lesson from the October 7 events, Fleishman emphasized that no officer in uniform should engage in political speech. He urged Defense Minister Yoav Gallant to summon Kochavi and demand he decide whether to continue as Chief of Staff or pursue a political career, warning that if Kochavi chooses politics, he should step down from his military role.
