Israeli Opposition Unites to Condemn Coalition Over Military Service Exemption Bill

Leaders of Israel's opposition parties launched a coordinated attack against the governing coalition regarding the controversial military service exemption bill, hours after the IDF Chief of Staff warned about its negative impact on the army amid ongoing war. In a joint statement, opposition heads urged coalition lawmakers to halt the bill's advancement, issuing a stern warning to anyone supporting it. The statement was signed by Opposition Leader Yair Lapid, Yisrael Beiteinu Chairman Avigdor Lieberman, Democratic Party head Yair Golan, Israel Party leader Gadi Eizenkot, Beyachad Chairman Naftali Bennett, MK Hili Tropper, and reservist representatives led by Yoaz Hendel. Notably absent was Blue and White leader Benny Gantz.

The statement emphasized the responsibility of coalition members not to vote for legislation that severely harms the IDF during wartime, directly opposing the Chief of Staff's dramatic warning. It added that supporters of the exemption bill would face lasting public condemnation from Israeli citizens who serve and work.

This opposition response follows the IDF Chief of Staff's letter to the Prime Minister, Defense Minister, and Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee chairman, expressing opposition to the bill approved by the committee ahead of its second and third readings. The bill proposes freezing arrest, investigation, and enforcement procedures against yeshiva students for several months, a period that could extend due to upcoming elections. The Chief of Staff highlighted that advancing the bill amid a severe manpower shortage in the IDF undermines the military's operational capabilities.
