Sharp Rise in Arrests of Ultra-Orthodox Men Despite New Draft Freeze Law
In the past 24 hours, there has been a significant increase in arrests of ultra-Orthodox men related to military conscription. On Monday, a Hasidic scholar and father was detained and sent to a military prison after arriving at the recruitment office to regularize his status. He had received a summons the previous week but did not expect to be arrested. Following his detention by the military police, he was sentenced to 20 days in military jail.
This arrest occurred just one day after the approval of a law freezing arrests of yeshiva students, amid a stern letter from the IDF Chief of Staff opposing the legislation. Additionally, a student from the Or HaChaim yeshiva, identified as M., was arrested at his home in Jerusalem's Pisgat Ze'ev neighborhood during the night by military police. His family is receiving legal support from the Izakson law firm on behalf of the Notenim Gev organization.
Meanwhile, another Hasidic scholar from the Gur community, who was arrested the previous evening after attempting to regularize his status at the recruitment office, was released today after serving a 20-day military prison sentence. Reports also mention the detention of a young Arloi Hasid and student at the Chayei Torah yeshiva in Be'er Sheva, who was similarly arrested after presenting himself to the recruitment office and transferred to military prison 10.
These developments highlight ongoing tensions between the ultra-Orthodox community and the Israeli military regarding conscription enforcement, despite recent legislative efforts to ease arrests of yeshiva students.
