Bereaved Mother Shares Emotional Journey of Loss and Hope on Israeli TV
Hagit Rein, mother of the late Lt. Col. Benia Rein who was killed about 20 years ago in the Second Lebanon War, appeared on Channel 14 to recount her painful yet inspiring journey since her son's death. Despite the deep loss that shattered her world, Rein has dedicated herself to continuing her son's legacy and mission, drawing strength from a poignant message he left in his travel journal from Poland. She described finding his words, "This death has given birth to life... Life has great demands and obligations. May we have the strength to meet them," which have guided her path.
Rein explained that over the past two decades, she has viewed herself as carrying a dual mission: her own and that of her late son. She has spoken to thousands of high school students, soldiers, and bereaved families, offering them hope and support. In recent years, she has focused on accompanying bereaved families and wounded soldiers, emphasizing the importance of continuing life despite the pain. "When sitting shiva, it seems impossible to rise from it, and then someone comes after 20 years and says: friends, we continue," she said.
During the live broadcast, when Rein broke down in tears, hosts Dana and Ron embraced her, with Ron expressing gratitude for her strength and calling her a hero. Rein's story highlights the resilience and dedication of bereaved families in Israel who transform their grief into a mission to inspire and support others.
The interview was part of a broader effort to honor the memory of fallen soldiers and provide comfort to families affected by war, reflecting on 20 years since the Second Lebanon War and the ongoing impact on Israeli society.
