Lazer Brody Releases Emotional New Version of 'Al Eleh Ani Bochiah' for Av Month

Jewish music artist Lazer Brody, known by the nickname "Menachem," has released a heartfelt new rendition of the traditional "Declaration of the Month" prayer to mark the beginning of the month of Av. This version uniquely combines the haunting melody of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach's "Al Eleh Ani Bochiah," a tune rooted in the Book of Lamentations expressing sorrow over the destruction of the Temple, with the hopeful song "Ani Maamin," which affirms pure faith in the coming of the Messiah.

The release coincides with the solemn month of Av, traditionally a time of reduced joy and mourning in Jewish tradition, especially around the Nine Days leading up to Tisha B'Av. Brody’s arrangement is accompanied by a special music video that visually contrasts images of the Temple's destruction with scenes symbolizing hope and redemption.

Brody, who performed the vocals, voices, and editing for the piece, explained his artistic choice: "The month of Av is complex. On one hand, it is a month of mourning; on the other, it is a month of hope. I chose to combine 'Al Eleh Ani Bochiah' with 'Ani Maamin' to express this tension and remind us that even within pain, there is room for faith and hope." The release was shared on the Sabbath marking the start of Av, emphasizing its spiritual significance.
