Kayakers Capture Stunning Jellyfish Bloom Off Ireland's Waterford Coast

Two kayakers off the coast of Waterford, Ireland, witnessed and recorded a spectacular natural event as thousands of transparent jellyfish gathered in the blue waters. This phenomenon, known as a jellyfish bloom, occurs when warm waters, abundant food, and favorable sea currents cause large numbers of jellyfish to congregate in one area. While visually impressive, some jellyfish species can deliver painful stings to swimmers. Experts noted that during this time of year, common jellyfish species in Irish waters include the compass jellyfish, the blue jellyfish, and the barrel jellyfish. Brendan Cosgrave, who filmed the scene, expressed amazement at the vast extent of the jellyfish carpet stretching across the sea.
