TikTok Launches New AI Spam Crackdown Targeting Millions of Fake Accounts
TikTok is intensifying its fight against misleading content generated by artificial intelligence by introducing new measures to combat the surge of AI-driven spam on its platform. This move comes amid rapid advancements in AI tools that enable mass production of videos and content, complicating users' ability to find reliable information and challenging original creators to stand out.
Central to TikTok's announcement is a pilot program launching in the coming weeks, featuring enhanced detection systems aimed at identifying accounts spreading AI-based spam. The focus will be on sensitive areas that could affect public trust or welfare, including politics, current events, financial advice, and medical content. TikTok emphasized that spam has been prohibited since its inception and that automated technologies are already used extensively to detect and remove such accounts. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, over 86 million fake accounts were removed.
Additionally, TikTok has joined the governing committee of the C2PA organization, which promotes the Content Credentials standard. This standard enhances transparency by indicating when images or videos have been created or significantly edited using AI. TikTok was the first video platform to implement this standard about two years ago, and since then, more than 3 billion videos have been tagged as AI-generated using a combination of Content Credentials, creator tagging tools, and invisible watermark technology developed by TikTok. As part of its new role, TikTok plans to help expand adoption of this standard industry-wide.
Beyond technological solutions, TikTok is expanding its AI literacy efforts by collaborating with NAMLE and AI expert Henry Ajder to develop a new responsible AI usage guide. The company continues to invest in an AI literacy and safe use program launched in November 2025, which has amassed over 200 million views and received more than $4 million in funding.
TikTok is also advancing creative AI tools for users, including features that allow individuals to control their exposure to AI-generated content. This initiative aims to balance fostering creativity with maintaining a trustworthy and transparent user experience.
