Anan Khalaily Set for Historic Transfer from Belgium to Inter Milan
Anan Khalaily, a 21-year-old Israeli right-back, is on the verge of one of the most significant transfers in Israeli football history, moving to Inter Milan from Union Saint-Gilloise for a reported fee of 25 million euros. The transfer is pending additional medical tests requested by the Italian Olympic Committee's sports medicine institute, expected within the next two days.
Khalaily's rise began just three years ago when he was fighting for a spot in Maccabi Haifa's senior squad. After progressing through youth teams including Beitar Haifa and Neve Yosef, he returned to Maccabi Haifa at 17 and debuted in the senior team during a State Cup quarterfinal. His breakthrough came in the summer of 2023, highlighted by his performance in the U-20 World Cup where he scored three crucial goals, helping Israel secure third place. He also contributed to Israel's U-21 European Championship run, which qualified the team for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Instead of being loaned out, Khalaily secured a permanent place in Maccabi Haifa's lineup, scoring eight league goals in 31 appearances and four more in cup competitions. His performances attracted European clubs, leading to his transfer to Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium for about 7.5 million euros in June 2024. Despite a challenging start, he became a key player, known for his relentless stamina, defensive support, and attacking contributions.
Interest from major European clubs grew, with Napoli initially entering negotiations. However, Union Saint-Gilloise valued Khalaily higher than the 10 million euros Napoli offered. Inter Milan, seeking a replacement for Denzel Dumfries, identified Khalaily as a versatile, dynamic right-sided player with significant potential. The opportunity to join a prestigious club competing regularly in Serie A and the Champions League was decisive.
Khalaily's journey reflects his strong character and work ethic, nurtured by his father, Magdi, a fitness coach who personally trained him during early career setbacks. His transition from a defensively oriented right-back to an aggressive winger with explosive speed and one-on-one skills has been pivotal.
