Israeli Legal Commentator Guy Peleg Sues Facebook User for Defamation Over Criminal Allegation
Guy Peleg, a legal commentator for Channel 12 News, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Facebook user Reuven Pinto in the Nahf HaGalil Magistrate's Court. Peleg claims Pinto posted a comment falsely accusing him of committing a serious criminal offense, damaging his reputation and professional standing. The lawsuit demands 160,000 shekels in compensation and removal of the defamatory post.
According to the complaint, submitted by lawyers Asaf Sharaf and Nili Schatz, the defamatory comment was made in response to a post about Peleg. Peleg asserts he has never been suspected or charged with any crime, and the false accusation could mislead the public and harm his credibility. He has served for years as a reporter and legal analyst for Channel 12 and hosts a program on Radio 103FM.
The lawsuit highlights Peleg's professional reputation, noting he has received prestigious awards including the Sokolov Prize and the "Knight of Government Quality" award. Prior to filing the suit, Peleg sent Pinto a cease-and-desist letter demanding removal of the post, a public apology, and compensation, which Pinto ignored. The legal action seeks monetary damages, a court order to remove the post, and coverage of legal costs. The claims remain unproven pending court proceedings.
