Khomeini Funeral Sparks Controversy Over Use of Finnish Pork Transport Truck
The funeral procession of Ali Khamenei, killed in the opening strike of Operation 'Lion's Roar,' concluded in Mashhad after days of mourning attended by millions of regime supporters. However, a video from Karbala, Iraq, showing Khamenei's coffin being unloaded from a refrigerated truck sparked an unusual controversy. The truck bore the orange letter K, identified by Finnish and Iranian opposition media as branding from Finland's K Group retail chain, which operates over 1,000 stores and sells pork products.
Social media users questioned whether the truck had previously transported pork, a product forbidden under Islamic law, raising concerns about the appropriateness of using such a vehicle in the funeral. Kesko, the parent company of K Group, stated it only became aware of the footage after its release and has no direct connection to the truck or its ownership. The company suspects one of its logistics contractors sold the truck without removing the branding, violating contractual obligations.
Finnish media reported that shortly before the funeral, an Iraqi Facebook group posted an ad selling a truck matching the one seen in Karbala, with identical type, branding, and equipment. Reuters reported that the truck was used solely during the Karbala segment of the funeral procession, after which the coffin was transferred to an open vehicle for the street procession. This incident has stirred debate given the religious sensitivities involved in the funeral rites of such a prominent figure.
