Deadly Cobras Escape Into South China Towns After Typhoon Floods Snake Farms
In southern China’s Guangxi province, the city of Nanning is facing a terrifying crisis as hundreds of venomous snakes, including 800 to 900 deadly cobras, have escaped into residential areas following severe flooding caused by Typhoon Maysak. The storm’s heavy rains led to the collapse of dams and the inundation of snake breeding farms, triggering a mass release of these dangerous reptiles into the community.
Viral videos on Chinese social media show residents attempting to capture the snakes with fishing nets while cobra heads emerge from the muddy floodwaters. The threat is very real: a local resident hospitalized after being bitten recounted seeing five or six snakes around him while trying to clear debris from his flooded home. Medical personnel have treated several villagers for snakebites since the typhoon, with at least one fatality reported.
In response, local authorities declared a state of emergency, significantly increasing the supply of antivenom and establishing expedited treatment protocols at the city hospital. Specialized rescue teams equipped with nets and stun guns have been deployed to control the widespread snake presence and protect residents from further harm.
