Veterans Urged to Set Aside Politics for 50th Anniversary of Entebbe Rescue Operation
As the 50th anniversary of Operation Jonathan approaches, Emmanuel Ben Sabo calls on the elite Sayeret Matkal fighters to put aside political disputes and attend the commemorative ceremony at the President's Residence. The operation, also known as Operation Entebbe, was a daring military rescue mission that saved hostages from terrorists, instilling national pride and hope in Israel. Despite the heavy price, including the death of Yonatan Netanyahu, the operation symbolized courage and determination against terror.
Ben Sabo reflects on the passage of five decades, noting that while the nation has grown closer in some ways, new divisive forces have emerged, marked by boycotts, ostracism, and political quarrels that threaten the unity inspired by the original mission. The upcoming ceremony will bring together survivors, rescuers, and wounded veterans, alongside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, brother of fallen hero Yonatan Netanyahu.
However, some veterans have announced plans to boycott the event if the Prime Minister attends, citing concerns that he might politicize the occasion amid ongoing national tensions. Ben Sabo appeals to the veterans to honor their commander and comrades by setting aside political differences, emphasizing that the time for politics is later, and now is the moment to unite in memory and respect. He warns against repeating past mistakes of division that have weakened Israeli society and security.
The call underscores the importance of preserving the legacy of Operation Jonathan as a unifying symbol of heroism and national resilience, especially in light of recent tragedies and internal strife within Israel.
