Israeli Criminals Flee to Palestinian Authority Areas to Evade Arrests
Approximately 50 Israeli criminals currently hide in Palestinian Authority territories such as Ramallah, Jericho, and Bethlehem, according to informed sources. These fugitives include suspects wanted for serious crimes like murder, attempted murder, and rape, as well as those fleeing assassination attempts by rivals. One northern Israeli criminal, known to police, relocated to Ramallah with his family after a violent shooting incident, choosing a hotel for its lower cost and perceived safety from enemies. Another criminal from central Israel recently stayed in a secured compound in Jericho before moving to a safe house near Haifa, seeking protection and attempting reconciliation with rivals.
The phenomenon spans different sectors, including Jewish criminals sometimes carrying foreign passports. Many fugitives prefer hiding in abandoned buildings or isolated caves to avoid detection. Israeli police acknowledge this trend and estimate that around 15 fugitives were arrested in Ramallah over the past year, most in murder cases. A police source emphasized that the Palestinian territories have become a major refuge for criminals evading Israeli law enforcement but stressed that systematic efforts continue to locate and arrest them.
Arrest operations involve special forces such as the Yamam counter-terrorism unit, Lahav 433, Border Police undercover units, and the Masada unit of the Israel Prison Service. Recently, these units apprehended five murder suspects hiding in Ramallah hotels and apartments. One notable arrest involved Yamam forces raiding a hotel to detain a murder suspect from southern Israel, who was caught completely off guard. Police maintain a detailed list of wanted fugitives and conduct coordinated nighttime raids to bring them into custody.
