Marwan Barghouti Influences Israeli Arab Voters from Prison Ahead of Elections
A special report by the Israel Prison Service (IPS) reveals that Marwan Barghouti, serving five life sentences for planning terrorist attacks, continues to exert significant ideological influence despite his incarceration. The report, published by Liran Tamari in Yedioth Ahronoth's 7 Days supplement, states that Barghouti has not fundamentally changed but has shifted his approach from violent acts to intellectual terrorism, spreading narratives that justify violence and promote extremist ideology.
Barghouti, described by IPS officials as a dangerous convicted murderer, maintains a charismatic and respectful public image while covertly encouraging young Palestinians to continue the path of violence. He is quoted as saying, "A state does not receive independence; a state takes independence, and for a state to take independence, blood must be shed." The report highlights his exceptional status within Palestinian factions, noting Hamas’s strategic interest in his release during negotiations for hostages in Gaza, reflecting ideological closeness.
Recently, Barghouti has been preparing the ground for the Palestinian Authority presidential elections and coordinating with Hamas leadership to unify forces and remove Mahmoud Abbas from power. Moreover, the report reveals Barghouti’s efforts to influence the Arab sector within Israel ahead of upcoming elections. He has established strong ties with Arab Israeli Knesset members, who have sought his endorsement and assistance in forming a unified Arab political party aimed at increasing their parliamentary influence and potentially altering the Israeli government.
An IPS senior official warned that Barghouti is more dangerous than previous released terror leaders like Yahya Sinwar and Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, describing him as "a wolf in sheep’s clothing" who is building a radical power base and could attack Israel once able. The report underscores Barghouti’s multifaceted political strategy, spanning Palestinian, international, and Israeli domestic arenas, with a consistent goal of advancing his ideological agenda through any available channel.
