Rolex Watch Uncovers Murder of Ronald Platt by Fugitive Albert Walker in English Channel
On July 28, 1996, fishermen off the coast of Devon, southwest England, discovered a heavily weighted body tied to a 4.5-kilogram anchor weight about six miles from shore. The victim was unidentifiable due to advanced decomposition and lack of documents. However, a resilient Rolex Oyster Perpetual watch on the man's wrist, still ticking despite prolonged submersion, became the key to solving the case. The watch's serial number and service history, traced through Rolex's meticulous records, revealed the victim as Ronald Joseph Platt, a former soldier and TV technician.
Platt had unknowingly become entangled with Albert Johnson Walker, a Canadian financial advisor and Interpol's fourth most wanted fugitive for fraud and money laundering. Walker assumed the false identity "David Davis" and manipulated Platt into leaving England for Canada, leaving behind personal documents that Walker then used to steal Platt's identity. When Platt returned to England in 1995, he threatened Walker's freedom and stolen identity, prompting Walker to murder him during a fishing trip on his boat, the Lady Jane, in June 1996.
Investigators linked Walker to the crime through multiple pieces of evidence, including a receipt for the anchor weight, DNA from hair found on the boat, and GPS data confirming the Lady Jane's location at the time of the murder. The Rolex watch's power reserve of 44 to 48 hours allowed forensic experts to pinpoint Platt's time of death to June 20, 1996, disproving Walker's alibi. In June 1998, Walker was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.
This case highlights the extraordinary durability and precision of Rolex watches, originally designed by Hans Wilsdorf in 1905 to withstand extreme conditions. The watch not only identified the victim but also established the timeline of the crime, ultimately bringing justice to a cold-blooded killer. The story remains a landmark in criminology, demonstrating how a single, well-crafted object can unravel a complex murder plot even from the depths of the ocean.
