Barcelona's Failed Point Guard Signings Lead to Major Roster Shakeup
Barcelona came close to signing Jean Montero, a standout point guard from Valencia, but ultimately chose to pursue veteran Mike James, a decision that backfired as neither player joined the club. According to Catalan sports outlet Sport, Barcelona's outgoing coach, Xavi Pascual, preferred James over Montero, believing the experienced American would have a greater impact. Barcelona had already offered Montero a multi-year contract, and the player was willing to join, but the club halted negotiations to focus on James, who also agreed in principle to return to the Spanish league under Pascual.
However, Pascual later decided to leave Barcelona, pending release arrangements with Dubai, causing the James deal to collapse as well. James withdrew from the move, and his next destination remains uncertain. This sequence of events unraveled Barcelona's professional plans within weeks, leaving the club without either of their preferred point guards despite initially viewing Montero as a key fit for their fast-paced, offensive style inspired by Pedro Martinez's Valencia team.
Following these setbacks, Barcelona reached agreements with two other point guards, Justin Robinson and Omoha Gibson, with official announcements expected soon. Meanwhile, Olympiacos capitalized on the situation by signing Montero. Olympiacos coach Giorgos Bartzokas commented that Montero and teammate Cody Miller-McIntyre felt their system would significantly aid their career development.
