Chabad Opens New Jewish Community Center in Latvian Resort City Jurmala
A new Chabad center has been inaugurated in Jurmala, Latvia, a popular Baltic Sea resort city known for attracting thousands of tourists annually. The center, led by Rabbi Mendy Zilberstrom, is strategically located in the heart of Jurmala's tourist district to serve both local Jews and visitors from around the world. It offers a community hub featuring prayer services, kosher food, family activities, and warm Jewish hospitality.
Rabbi Zilberstrom emphasized the center's role as a vital connection point for Jews passing through, noting the frequent interactions with locals and tourists alike. The location holds historical significance as well, as it was a key stop for the previous Lubavitcher Rebbe during his journey out of Russia, with documented evidence of his stay in Jurmala.
The opening ceremony included a mezuzah affixing ritual and a tour of the facility, which boasts a kosher kitchen, a children's play area, and a coffee corner designed for relaxation amid the busy tourist environment. The event concluded with singing and a festive meal, underscoring the center's mission to be a vibrant, welcoming Jewish presence in the heart of Europe.
This new Chabad house aims to continue the Rebbe's vision of spreading unconditional love and support to Jews worldwide, providing a spiritual and physical refuge for travelers and locals in Latvia's resort town.
