Indian Cattle Herder Survives Half-Hour Lioness Attack by Staying Calm
On July 6, in the village of Garajia in Gujarat, western India, a cattle herder named Kalu Parmar survived a nearly half-hour attack by a lioness. According to local reports, the lioness ambushed Parmar from behind as he went to feed his cattle, knocking him to the ground and pinning him beneath her. A video circulating on social media shows Parmar lying on the ground, bloodied, while the lioness stands over him, baring her teeth and growling at onlookers.
Villagers tried to scare the lioness away by shouting and throwing stones, but she remained with Parmar for an extended period. Remarkably, Parmar did not attempt to fight or flee; instead, he stayed mostly still and gently stroked the lioness, likely instinctively trying to calm her and avoid worsening the attack. Eventually, the lioness retreated to a nearby wooded area.
Parmar was initially treated at a government hospital in Palitana and later transferred to Sir T Hospital in Bhavnagar for further care. Forestry officials reported that he sustained injuries from the lioness's claws but no serious bites. Local forest officer Pradip Godakia explained that the lioness entered the village and was frightened by the villagers' shouting, which may have caused her to seize Parmar as she tried to escape.
Residents noted that lion movements near the village are not unusual, with repeated warnings about lions entering residential areas. Earlier that day, the same lioness had been seen nearby, and a confrontation with a buffalo likely prevented further attacks. Gujarat is home to the last natural population of Asiatic lions, with an estimated 891 lions currently living in the state. Authorities have identified the lioness and dispatched teams with tranquilizer rifles to capture her. The video has gone viral in India due to the astonishing contrast between the danger and Parmar's calm survival strategy.
