Trump Signals US Will Allow Ukraine to Independently Produce Patriot Missiles
During a press conference following a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, US President Donald Trump announced that the United States intends to permit Ukraine to independently manufacture Patriot missiles. This marks a shift from previous policies, as Ukraine had only received limited Patriot missile batteries donated by European allies. The new agreement, expected to be finalized soon, will enable Ukraine to rapidly produce these missile interceptors, enhancing its defense against frequent Russian ballistic missile attacks on Ukrainian cities.
Trump highlighted the improvement in relations between the US and Ukraine since last year's tensions at the White House, describing the current atmosphere as friendly and cooperative. Zelensky praised the Patriot system as the best defense against ballistic missiles, while Trump complimented Ukraine's military industry and said the transfer of production knowledge would occur in the near future.
In the same conference, Trump discussed his communications with Russian President Vladimir Putin, noting that Putin desires to end the war and had proposed a meeting between Trump and Zelensky in Moscow, which Trump declined. When asked if Zelensky would travel to Moscow, the Ukrainian leader responded with a smile that Moscow was unsafe due to Ukrainian drones stationed there. Trump expressed optimism about resolving the conflict but did not set a deadline for talks. Additionally, Trump mentioned the possibility of the US purchasing drones from Ukraine, citing Ukraine's extensive experience in their mass production.
