Former Martial Arts Champion Attempts to Assault Police Officer in Virginia Beach
On the early morning of July 5, during Fourth of July celebrations in Virginia Beach, Timothy Allen Wagert, a 33-year-old former martial arts instructor and three-time world champion, was involved in a violent confrontation with police. Around 2:20 a.m., officers responded to a reported assault on Atlantic Street. Video footage that quickly went viral shows Wagert, wearing distinctive black-and-white striped pants, refusing to comply with police orders and attempting a spinning kick aimed at an officer's face. The kick missed, allowing the officer and three others to quickly subdue and arrest him.
Wagert is not an ordinary bystander; he previously served as CEO and head instructor at a prestigious martial arts school but was dismissed in 2021 due to inappropriate behavior, including prior assault incidents. Despite his professional background, his skills failed him during this incident. He now faces multiple charges, including assaulting a police officer, simple assault, reckless conduct, and two counts of interfering with a police officer.
Interestingly, just hours before the altercation, Wagert was seen nearby dancing and performing impressive acrobatics, described by witnesses as a "colorful character" who appeared friendly and even gave high-fives to beachgoers. Authorities are investigating what triggered the sudden shift from his relaxed demeanor to a violent attack on law enforcement.
