Online Credit Card Spending in Israel Surpasses 1 Billion Shekels Daily for First Time in June
In June, daily average online credit card spending in Israel reached approximately 1 billion shekels for the first time, according to data from Shva, the operator of Israel's payment infrastructure. This figure marks a 2.5% increase compared to May's daily online spending average and surpasses the previous record of 991 million shekels set in November 2025, a peak shopping month. Total online spending for June amounted to about 30 billion shekels.
Despite the online spending record, physical retail stores and malls did not see a decline, with online transactions accounting for 58.3% of total credit card expenditures in June, close to the 12-month average of around 58%. This indicates that the growth in online spending is driven mainly by an overall economic expansion rather than a shift from physical to online shopping.
The overall daily average credit card spending also hit a new high, exceeding 1.7 billion shekels for the first time. This nominal growth is attributed to rising prices and increased consumption, setting the stage for July, which typically sees record spending due to summer and school holidays.
June's total credit card spending reached 51.5 billion shekels, slightly below May's record 52.4 billion shekels due to fewer days in the month. Compared to June last year, spending surged by 23.6%, recovering from the impact of 13 days of conflict during Operation "With a Lion" in 2023, which severely restricted economic activity.
Sector-specific data from Shva shows sharp increases in leisure and entertainment spending by about 60% to 378 million shekels, travel agencies up 53.5% to 1.6 billion shekels, clothing and footwear up 45% to 2.9 billion shekels, hotels and accommodations up 43% to about 1 billion shekels, and restaurants and cafes up 38% to 3.7 billion shekels. In contrast, supermarket credit card spending rose modestly by 2.3% to 6.1 billion shekels, indicating real stagnation in essential household expenses.
Cash withdrawals from ATMs increased by 12% year-over-year to 5.7 billion shekels, although the daily average withdrawals slightly declined by 1.2% compared to May, remaining just below the pre-war historic peak of August 2023.
