US Navy Helicopter Squadron Commander Missing After Emergency Sea Landing Near Iran

Commander Gabriel Edwards, leader of the US Navy's Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 5, went missing following an emergency helicopter landing in the Arabian Sea on July 1. Despite an extensive search operation covering approximately 14,000 square miles involving multiple warships and aircraft, Edwards was not found. The search was officially suspended after more than 102 hours without any sign of him.

The helicopter made a complex emergency sea landing during a classified mission near the Gulf region, where the USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier, Edwards' base, is actively engaged in military operations against Iran. Three other crew members were rescued safely shortly after the landing, but Edwards was not among them.

Following the incident, Acting Secretary of the Navy Hong Cao posthumously promoted Edwards to the rank of captain, equivalent to lieutenant colonel. Edwards had served in the US Navy for two decades and is survived by his wife, Rebecca, and two children. Rebecca Edwards expressed gratitude for the support from the Navy and comfort in her husband's dedicated service to his country, squadron, and family.

US Navy officials stated there is no indication that hostile fire caused the emergency landing, and the technical or operational cause remains under official investigation. Details about the specific nature of the mission have not been disclosed. The USS George H.W. Bush continues to play a central role in US military efforts in the Gulf region amid tensions with Iran.
