Hyundai's Atlas Robot Makes Historic Appearance at 2026 World Cup
At the 2026 FIFA World Cup held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Hyundai's humanoid robot "Atlas" made a groundbreaking appearance by delivering the match ball to referee Ismail Al-Fateeh in front of tens of thousands of spectators and millions of viewers worldwide. This moment marked a significant milestone in integrating robotics into live sports events.
The event was the culmination of Hyundai's extensive marketing campaign to establish itself as a global leader in robotics. Prior to the tournament, Hyundai released a series of videos titled "School of Football," showcasing Atlas learning complex soccer movements through video analysis of real games. These videos garnered tens of millions of views and demonstrated the robot's advanced balance, coordination, and movement capabilities.
Atlas stands approximately 1.5 meters tall and features 56 degrees of freedom, making it one of the most advanced humanoid robots globally. While its activation begins with a human command, most actions are performed autonomously, with an internal control system managing balance, movement, and recovery from falls. In addition to Atlas, Hyundai deployed four "Spot" robots for security tasks at the stadium and the international broadcast center.
This initiative aligns with Hyundai's broader strategy following its acquisition of Boston Dynamics in 2021, aiming to integrate tens of thousands of robots into its factories by the end of the decade. Beyond its technological achievements, the event symbolized a future where robotics play a central role not only in industry but also in everyday life and entertainment.
