Eight Orphans Left Homeless After Rabbi Elazar Salem's Death in Modiin Illit
The mourning period for Rabbi Elazar Salem, a respected Torah scholar from Modiin Illit, concluded with deep sorrow. Rabbi Salem passed away on Wednesday, 16th of Tammuz, at only 50 years old. After the shiva, his widow and eight young orphans returned to an empty home, stripped of their father's presence. Rabbi Salem, who emigrated from France to Israel in his youth, was known for his dedication to Torah study and modest lifestyle. Despite severe financial hardships, including times when the family struggled to afford bread, he maintained joy and faith in God.
About two and a half years ago, Rabbi Salem was diagnosed with a serious brain illness, enduring a painful ordeal of hospitalizations and surgeries. Throughout his suffering, he refused to abandon his study routines and heartfelt prayers. His family recalls that his greatest concern was always for his children, repeatedly crying out, "But what will happen to the children? Who will care for the children?"
During the shiva, many visitors came to comfort the widow and orphans, including the youngest child, who emotionally recited the Kaddish at the funeral. The neighborhood rabbi, Rabbi Yisrael Zikerman, who supported the family during the illness, called on the community to rally around the grieving family, now left to raise eight children alone. Charity organizations in Modiin Illit warn that the family faces severe financial distress, with large debts accumulated during the illness and urgent needs for basic living expenses, clothing, and educational support. They urge the public to respond generously to fulfill the late rabbi's final plea to care for his children.
Immediate assistance for the widow and eight orphans is being coordinated through local charity channels.
